House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Advances Bill to Improve VA Clothing Allowance Process

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs held a markup and advanced Subcommittee on Economic Chairman Mike Levin’s (D-Calif.) bipartisan Mark O’Brien VA Clothing Allowance Improvement Act. This bill amends VA’s existing clothing allowance program by enabling automatic payments to continue on a recurring basis until the veteran opts out of the program or is no longer eligible.
“Thanks to Chairman Levin and Ranking Member Moore’s bipartisan bill, we are making it easier for veterans – especially veterans living with lifelong disabilities – to receive their earned clothing benefits,” said House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Takano (D-Calif.). “Throughout the 117th Congress, this Committee has been laser-focused on strengthening the benefits and care veterans receive. This includes toppling existing hurdles that may have previously prevented veterans from accessing their earned clothing benefits.”
“Veterans with service-connected conditions should not be on the hook for the cost of clothing damaged by their prosthetics, orthopedic devices, or medicine,” said Rep. Mike Levin. “They also should not have to reapply each year for these benefits, especially those with a lifelong condition. My bill cuts through red tape at the VA to make it easier for veterans to receive the clothing allowances they deserve. I’m proud to see this bill pass committee on a bipartisan basis, and I am hopeful we can pass it through the full House with wide bipartisan support soon.”
